The World Cup: The Great Leveler?

Every four years, we’re given the World Cup: a four-year period where our image of Germany goes from “an eccentric, somewhat suspicious but ultimately benign European country with strange porn and cabaret” to “Holocaust Holocaust Holocaust Holocaust.” During the World Cup, even the most progressive Americans can gloat in defeating a developing nation with a comparatively low development level- a nation that was also the ultimate port of call for millions of slaves who ended up in the United States.

On one hand, it’s not pretty. On another hand, it’s a rare opportunity to pretend anything other than differing levels of institutionalized exclusion determined the fates of millions of nations and peoples worldwide.

Or, I should just watch some fucking football.
